Hey everyone! It's been a while since I've posted a blog but I've really enjoyed reading everyone elses. It's awesome to know the dairy industry is full of supportive people! I've been really busy with the farm and school but I have wanted to share an experience from my spring semester.
You may be wondering why I'm going to back to school at the age of (soon to be 26) and dairy farming at the same time. My reasons start with the ever changing milk prices. Don't get me wrong,…

I find venting my frustration and emotions through blogging helps, alot. Today I had the morning milking off. Felt good to sleep in til 6. Got alot of house work done, I can see the kitchen sink again! Almost forgot it was there. Everything was going well, that is, until my husband David came in for lunch. When I asked how the morning milking went he just replied "ok." From the tone of his voice I could tell something was wrong. In a quick motion he wrapped me in a big hug then let it out:…

Another bill, another thing that needs fixed, another cow with mastitis. And not a big enough milk check to cover all of those expenses. I keep praying for a break to this vicious cycle. I know we are not alone. The majority of dairy farmers across the country are suffering and going through the same thing. Some days I feel as if we're at our breaking point. Some days I think we did it to ourselves. My husband and I started a dairy...purchased 105 cows in VA, last April of…

Hi Katie. I have posted some pictures of our AC tractors. Check them out. You said that your husband doesn't recognize my name. Well, I wasn't born in Vermont. I grew up in Connecticut. My parents weren't farmers, but I always wanted to farm since I was a little girl. So I went to UConn and got a degree in animal science. Then I moved up to Vermont to work on a farm. I fell in love with this state and I never left. Even though I am not a true Vermonter, I do feel like one. However, my husband's family, the Fleurys, have been here on this same farm for three generations and they have milked Jerseys that whole time. By the way, how is your husband related to Tom Pyle? He is the one in the Pyle family that I know best.
Hi Katie! Thanks for the welcome. It is always great to make the aquaintance of another Jersey dairy farmer. To answer your question, yes, I do know the Pyles of Shoreham. I met Tom when I was his DHIA tester in the mid 1980's. And we have been friends ever since then. I also want to tell you that I love your photos! I have posted a few photos of our farm and I hope I can post more Jersey photos in the future. Jerseys really do look cute in pictures, don't they?
