Matt Espenshade

Matt is a seventh generation dairy farmer from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Matt works with his parents on the farm, which has been in the family since 1867. The family milks 90 Holstein and Guernsey cows, maintaining a 21,000 lb. RHA, and they raise their own calves and heifers. His responsibilities include calf and heifer management, the breeding and genetics program, calf registrations, vaccination protocol and assisting with the daily operation of the farm. His wife Charlene is a Special Sections Editor of a weekly agriculture publication, and they have two sons, Evan, age 4, and Alan, 2.

In addition to the farm, Matt is the Master (President) of Elizabethtown Grange #2076, and a member of the Wyoming/Lackawanna Co. Farm Bureau.

Oh my god it has been forever! Doing well up here in MA. My husband and I milk 150 cows in North Western MA-mostly holsteins with a few swiss and 2 jerseys. We are expecting our first child (a boy) this September! Now if we could could actually make some money we would be doing great! How are you? I heard you are married now...any kids? You milking cows?

Thanks. I wouldn't necessarily call my page "jazzed up", but it works. Where are you from?

Thanks Matt ,
If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact us . If you are ever out this way (in the Vancouver BC area) let us know if you would like to stop by to have a look .
I have heard from other producers that the Jersey cows just love Robotic milkers do not have any so can not confirm .

Hey Matt ,
We have the VMS in for 6 months now we also did research to see which one we would go with it came down to several issues for us
- Teat preperation was prefered on the Delaval (including the pre strip )
- no monthly service contract of $800 dollars per month
- it opperated with less noise
- the Delaval Dealer in our area does not depend on one item (like a robot) to make money they are busy and will be there for the next 10 years
- it was a better fit for our farm
Several things to watch out for -
you will loose production for the first year not so much if you are 2x but if you are 3x you will loose some milk
Healthy feet are a must if you have foot problems they will not visit the machine at all or very little
somatic cell count will go up in the begining and so will bacteria
all in all a positive thing but very frustrating in the first 3 months

Matt, we do have a store. Right now you can purchase a hat. Find the STORE tab at the far right of the main navigation page.

What other merchandise or apparel would you be interested in purchasing? We'll see if we can sell it.

Glad you've joined. Do you work on your parent's dairy?
