Red-and-white pride

Darren Otte, of Columbus, Indiana, is proud to own a herd that isn’t your typical black-and-white herd. He started his dairy with a less well-known breed.

“Our Ayrshire cows are our distinguishing feature. I know of only three other herds that are Ayrshire in Indiana,” Otte says.

Otte started his dairy career a couple of years after he graduated from high school. He began by working for a neighboring dairy for four years. Meanwhile, he started buying and showing purebred… Continue

Proud to be a Dairy Farmers Wife

My hubby and I live in Central PA on a 120 acre dairy farm. My hubby has lived on this farm all his life. His grandparents and then his parents had the farm. In a couple of years ( maybe 2 or 3 ) we will be a Century Farm . That is a farm that has been in the same family for 100 years. Hubby took it over from his parents in 1972 . He is also a volunteer fire fighter ( 41 years ) , a forest fire warden and a Township Supervisor. A lot of older people in our area always call him if they have… Continue

Milk Talk September 30, 2009

Written by the Milk Lady.

I went to see Doctor Bjarnason last week. Doctor Bjarnason has the perfect solution for the over supply of milk. In the morning, give every child a dairy product for snack at 10:00 am. This will be an energy boost. He said give them cheese, milk or yogurt. He also said that kids would do better in school if kids were not hungry. The kids will learn with more ease. For ADD kids, a midmorning snack will benefit them too. This is certainly worth trying. If this… Continue

Member Feature: October: The Beginning!

When I was approached by Ryan Curtis to write blogs for Proud to Dairy, at first I was so excited!... and then the panicking started in and the doubtful questions started ringing in my mind; ‘ Who am I going to interview?’, ‘What am I going to ask?’ and ‘When am I going to have time to write this?’. I must say that after much deliberate thinking, I have concluded to write this first interview on, none other than, myself.

WHAT?!

Okay, hear me out for two minutes (because my… Continue
